A Bald-Faced Lie

By: Joshua Sullivan, Feb. 28, 2013
There is a quote that many Gun Control Advocates use.  It goes something like this: “Assault Weapons have only one purpose - to kill as many people as possible, as fast as possible.”

I’ll tell you right now: that is a bald-faced lie.  Here’s why...

If it were true, why are police and law enforcement issued them?  Is their role “to kill as many people as possible, as fast as possible?”  I certainly don’t think so.  Their role is to “protect and serve (society.  I recommend that you read my article on Police Protection, if you haven’t already done so)”.  Since the police are issued so called assault weapons, then such firearms cannot have only the one purpose that many politicians claim.  I propose that such firearms are actually “Defense Weapons” when used by law abiding citizens.  And in all actuality, the police are just citizens whose occupation is Law Enforcement.  At the most fundamental level, what differentiates a police officer from a normal citizen is a title on a paycheck.  Well, that and Civil Immunity from lawsuits.  That’s right - the police are shielded from civil suits as long as they are acting within department protocol.  Protocols can vary drastically from one department to another.  I’m not saying that the police are bad.  Many are highly skilled - others are not.  Some are highly proficient marksmen - others are not.  Most are law abiding - others are not.

On the other hand, concealed carry citizens are normal citizens who do not have civil immunity for their actions.  That means they are liable for any harm they cause.  I believe that this makes them more judicious in their use of deadly force.  Also, they are able to counter active threats more swiftly than police because they do not have to be called to the scene of the crime if they are present to begin with.  Concealed carry citizens are the real First Responders; police and other emergency personnel are actually Second Responders.  Just like the police, concealed carry permit holders come in a variety of skill levels.  Some are highly skilled - others are not.  Some are highly proficient marksmen - others are not.  Most are law abiding - others are not.

The real question becomes “who would you rather have defend you?  A citizen who won’t be held accountable for the repercussions of his actions (ie: the police)?  Or a citizen who knows that he is responsible for every bullet he fires and the consequences of those shots (ie: A concealed carry permit holder)?”

Remember - neither the police nor the concealed carry population has a monopoly on skill.  A large percentage of both groups are highly capable protectors.

Also remember that the police cannot be everywhere at once.  They can take as long as an hour to respond to an “active shooter” scenario while concealed carry permit holders are usually able to engage the shooter in a matter of seconds.  Response time is crucial to saving lives.

Who do you want to protect you?  The best thing about Concealed Carry Laws is that you don’t have to choose.  Both groups of citizens are able to defend you!

Criminals don’t get permits to murder, rape, or steal - why would they get one to carry a gun?
